Purge
excerpted from the KotaPress collection Drift
By Trevor Hewett

Meeting him again after all these years
and remembering the bitterness from youth
still nagging at me inside,
like a permanently-aching tooth,
I found that I could hate him no more
and the handshake seemed to make us free -
the guilt lifting from him like a fever,
the forgiveness cleansing me.
