SEA MIST
By Trevor Hewett

Night on the river
at the end of an Autumn day.
Mist drifts, silent
over still water.

The village is smothered,
all sound is slow -
footsteps in the street,
a passing van,
a dog somewhere.

Weak light
from windows, street-lamps,
dulls, recedes then vanishes.

No movement now
except the drip
of moisture from foliage.

Silence swells.
