"I HATE THIS" - AN AWARD-WINNING PLAY ON STILLBIRTH
AT THE 2004 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL

from David Hansen

"I am happy to submit to you an overwhelming recommendation for I HATE THIS ... I felt so strongly that David's play had much to offer to the public that I suggested to our local professional midwifery chapter that we present this play again to hallmark National Nurse Midwifery Week ... Even patrons who were older, or those who had never had children, expressed their approval of his powerful performance."
- Ellen Margles, CNM, MSN
University Hospitals Health System

"There is no word for the parent of a dead child."  Join David Hansen for "I Hate This", a new solo performance that takes you from the moment his son was born and through the year that follows ... but not in that order.  An honest, horrible, and even humorous trip through one father¹s experience with stillbirth.

"I Hate This" is directed by Thomas Cullinan, with original music by Dennis Yurich.

Synopsis: David and his wife Toni learn at her 30-week check-up that their unborn child has died. Jumping back and forth between two timelines, David tells the story of the 36 hours between learning this truth and the birth of their first child, as well as the year that follows - detailing the frustration, recrimination, guilt, sorrow and ultimate acceptance of their son's death.

David plays over a dozen different characters, including friends and family members who cannot express their feelings, medical practitioners(compassionate and not) and himself, learning to cope with his anger and helplessness in the midst of grief, as well as fashioning a new way of looking at life.
