The word, "grief," is used to express the road parents must
take to find ways to heal and adjust to the loss of their baby. The following
are some quotes that define grief in creative healing ways.
"Grief, is like a desert, and the only way out of it is through
it." ~Rita Barclay
"...A great grief is a tremendous bonfire in which
all the trash of life is consumed." ~Clare Booth Luce
"People say, 'time heals.' Yet time by itself doesn't heal.
If a person in grief sits in a corner waiting for time to take care of
bitter sorrow, time won't do anything. It is what we do with time that
can heal." ~Reverend Arnoldo Pangrazzi
Editor's note: The following is from Shakespeare's
Hamlet. This speech takes place in a room in the castle when Hamlet
attepmts to explain to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern how he has been
feeling since the death of his father and visitation of his father's
ghost. In typical fashion of "support" people who are
clueless, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern really don't understand Hamlet's
despair!
HAMLET
I will tell you why...I have of late--but
wherefore I know not--lost all my mirth, forgone all
custom of exercises; and indeed it goes so heavily
with my disposition that this goodly frame, the
earth, seems to me a sterile promontory, this most
excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave
o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted
with golden fire, why, it appears no other thing to
me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours.
What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason!
how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how
express and admirable! in action how like an angel!
in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the
world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me,
what is this quintessence of dust? man delights not
me: no, nor woman neither...
Editor's note: I'm sure you've heard this Shakespeare
line a million times. But if you want to REALLY understand what Horatio
is FEELING when he says it, I highly recommend Campbell
Scott's version of Hamlet which is not available on vhs and dvd for
rental or purchase. When I saw this performance, I finally understood
that my heart cracked when my own son died.
HORATIO
Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince:
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!
