We are so honored to be hosting
John Fox as a featured reader in our Wednesday, October 24th reading here
in Seattle, Washington. When John offered to teach a workshop to benefit
the Mrs. Duck Project in addition to reading, we couldn't believe it.
His heart and soul are truly in his work, and he puts his actions behind
every word he writes. We are very excited to tell you that John's Poetic
Medicine workshop will be open to the public. The following is excerpted
from his website PoeticMedicine.com and will give you a good idea about
what this workshop is, how it can help you in your own life, and/or how
it can facilitate the work you do in caring for others. Don't miss this
chance to work with John!!!
What is Poetic Medicine: The Healing Art of Poem-Making About?
John Foxs Poetic Medicine workshop provides a supportive and
safe place to express yourself within the container of a poem
allowing the essential elements distilled by your writing to be felt,
explored and integrated.
Approached as transformational process, and especially when shared
with others, poem-making is healing.
Poem-making is a tangible, creative act to reclaim and embody your
voice, feelings, truth, and the particulars of your world. The workshop
invites the fresh sensibility and playfulness we knew as children. It
honors your unique, adult voice that has ripened over the years. The
storms you have weathered, those times when you have thrived, the way
the world has moved you these deserve a place on the page.
Drawing from a splendid range of sources, you will experiment with
poetic tools of metaphor, sound, rhythm, imagery and symbol as remedies
to connect with your wholeness and live with greater heart. Poetic language
and speaking that language aloud can act like a revived capillary to
relieve numbness and return feeling to your life.
We will read poems by inspiring poets and explore writing exercises
that tune us to a variety of experience, including: the poetry of earth
and spirit, a life of feeling and relationship, the playfulness and
power of language, a sense of community, the blessing of common things.
We will explore how stillness and empathic listening deepen the act
Who Typically Attends the Workshop?
This course is for anyone interested in expressing their truth and
creativity. It is useful to anyone in the therapeutic, medical, spiritual,
holistic healing, and educational fields. It is valuable to community
leaders. If you are just beginning to explore writing or have been writing
for a long time, this work will encourage and refresh you.
