ONION JEALOUSY
It's a painful surprise
the way it slaps the eyes
with its stabbing sting
and keeps it up
long after the knife blade
has done slicing up
waxy white flesh
Peeling-there's no other way to defrock an onion
The eyes don't stop smarting
just because you think they should
as you peel back layer upon layer
But rather its acrid bite
becomes more pure and enraged
the closer to core you go
until you're at the heart of an onion
and there's no more peeling to do.
